ABSTRACT

Male breast cancer is a relatively rare but significant health concern globally. This rarity leaves a gap in its awareness and self-examination practice among male demographics. Thus, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards male breast cancer and breast self-examination among a convenient sample of 100 male undergraduate students. Data was obtained with a self-structured questionnaire and this was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result shows that knowledge assessment unveils a concerning mean score of 25.0 indicating a poor level of knowledge. Attitudes towards male breast cancer exhibit a negative pattern, with a mean score of 2.13. Breast self-examination practices are notably low, with a mean score of 1.70. Examining factors that contribute to awareness, participants express a moderate consensus (mean = 2.36). Attitudinal findings reveal that 73.0% of participants lack awareness that breast cancer affects males, while 70.7% agree that early detection through breast self-examination leads to better treatment outcomes. In terms of practices, a substantial 85.0% report never performing breast self-examination as recommended. A moderate significant positive relationship was observed between level of study and male student’s attitude towards breast cancer (0.456, p<0.05), however the relationship between level of knowledge and BSE practice was not significant. In conclusion, the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to male breast among the participants is low. It is recommended that there should be intensified educational programs, integration of breast cancer awareness in the nursing curriculum, and targeted strategies to improve knowledge retention and engagement in preventive practices among male undergraduates.
