ABSTRACT

This study delved into the knowledge and attitudes concerning urinary tract infections (UTIs) among students in the Faculty of Education at the University of Benin, guided by three research questions. Employing a survey research design, data was gathered through a self-structured questionnaire from a population of 250 students. The instrument's validity was established by experts, and reliability was confirmed with a coefficient of 0.832 using the split-half method. Results revealed a moderate understanding of UTIs among students, demonstrated by their recognition of symptoms and causes, including difficulties during urination, burning sensations, and the presence of pus. Notably, participants exhibited a high level of knowledge regarding UTI causes, linking factors such as bad diet, kidney stones, and diabetes to the condition. These findings align with existing literature, affirming the importance of diet and kidney health in UTI prevention. Moreover, positive attitudes towards UTI prevention were evident, with students emphasizing habits like timely bladder emptying, adequate fluid intake, cranberry juice consumption, and avoidance of genital creams. This aligns with established recommendations for reducing UTI risks through responsible behaviors.
