ABSTRACT

Wound Care is a holistic process that considers the patient's current state of health, the factors that may impede wound healing, and the cause, duration and state of the wound. Wound care remains a challenging clinical problem, correct and efficient management is essential for proper wound healing. The challenge that healthcare providers are facing is multifactorial and these factor, in turn are related to education and training with respect to wound care. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitude of Undergraduate Nursing students towards wound care in University of Benin, Benin City, Edo-State. Stratified sampling technique was considered adequate for the study. A self-structured questionnaire was used to elicit items in line with the research objectives.

The sample size for the study was 195 students who completed the questionnaire designed for the study. 195 students correctly completed and returned their copies of the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data; results were presented in pie chart and tables. Hypotheses were tested using Chi-square to determine whether significant differences (p<0.05) existed between attitude and the level of study. Hypotheses tested that there is a significant relationship between the two variables. The procedures were done using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 for windows. The result from the study shows that there is a high level knowledge (79.6%), positive attitude towards wound care and factors influencing wound care were identified as poor use of wound care protocols, limited amount of wound care training and education, lack of documentation of wound care, poor pain management, inadequate and inappropriate educational module content to current nursing practice. I recommend that nursing students should be trained and offered refresher courses via workshop education with the use of case studies on wounds will help to provide up-date knowledge on wound care which can be translated to practice.
