Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship of knowledge and attitude of traders in Benin metropolis towards participation in sanitation practices. Five research question were raised to serve as a guide in the study.
The descriptive survey research design was used in eliciting response from the respondents. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect data from a sample of 150 traders in Benin metropolis and with a total population of about 18527 traders. The collected data was analyzed using simple percentage and frequency count.
In the findings is was observed that traders in Benin metropolis have good knowledge about the concepts of sanitation, they know that good knowledge about sanitation helps promote good and proper sanitation practices. It was also observed that the traders in Benin city metropolis have string positive attitude towards sanitation. Based on the findings, it was concluded that a good knowledge and strong attitudes about sanitation is paramount for traders to effectively participate in sanitation practices. In line with the findings the following recommendations were made; government and leaders of the market should provide more basic sanitation facilities such as hand washing, and good toilet facilities, indiscriminate disposal of refuse should be discouraged, awareness and sensitization programmes should be carried out as often as possible to help enlighten those who do not have a previous knowledge about sanitation and also serve as a remainder to the traders about the benefit of proper sanitation.
