ABSTRACT
The study examines the knowledge and attitude of students towards safety in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all the students in the public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, out of which hundred (100) students formed the sample population of the study. The reliability of the instrument was calculated with the application of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and the reliability was found to be 0.75. A simple percentage was used to analyze the data collected. The findings revealed that the level of safety knowledge of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area is high, the students in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area have a negative attitude towards safety. The finding also reveals the various ways the attitude of secondary school students towards safety can be improved through the following: Safety methods should be taught in schools every day, Students should be monitored regularly to ensure they practice safety measures, Students should be discouraged from risky safety practices in schools and continuous assessment should be conducted regularly in school for safety. And also the findings reveal the safety practices in public schools which include social safety, first aid training, and environmental safety. Based on the findings of this research the following recommendations were made: Students should be encouraged to practice their knowledge on safety amongst others, students should be counseled on the importance of practicing safety. Students should be monitored regularly to ensure they practice safety measures, Students should be discouraged from risky safety practices in schools, and the school management and teachers should adhere to the above measures to improve students ’ attitudes towards safety
