Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge and attitude of people towards urban planning in Egor local government area, Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide this study. What are the perceptions of people on urban planning in Egor local government area? What are the attitude of people towards urban planning? What are the factors that affect people's attitude towards urban planning? What are the current practices of people in regards to urban planning?

A descriptive survey research was employed for this study. The population of the study consists of residents in Egor local government area. A sample of 250 residents were selected randomly from the population. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collected was analysed using frequency counts and simple percentages. In order to ascertain the reliability of the instrument, it was administered to ten(10) people selected from similar status as those in those used in the study however thus sample is excluded from the main study. After administration of the 10 questionnaire the data collected was analysed.

From the findings of this study it was seen that the people in Egor LGA lack knowledge on urban planning, therefore are not part of the planning process. It was also seen that there is little or no compliance to urban plans. Also thegovernment and planning institutions lack capacity to plan and enforce development regulations. It was also seen that people do not take into cognizance the urban plans, leading to indiscriminate building. So the recommendations includes creation of awareness on the importance of urban planning and the role of the people in urban plan execution. It is recommended that urban plans should be made easier so as to enable the interest of the people and increase compliance. Also theplanning institutions should be strengthened by legislation, information, Free from political interference and provision of skilled personnel to enable them carry out their work effectively.
