ABSTRACT

This study investigates the knowledge and attitude of parents of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State, towards sex education. Sex education is crucial for equipping young people with the information and values needed to make informed decisions about their sexual health. However, parents play a significant role in this process, and their knowledge and attitudes are essential factors that influence the effectiveness of sex education programs. The research employs the approach of surveys in the form of questionnaires to collect data from a sample of parents in the study area. The study assesses parents' knowledge and attitude of parents of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State, regarding sex education. While some parents have a good understanding of the importance of sex education, others hold misconceptions and reservations. Factors such as education and income levels appear to influence parents' knowledge and attitudes significantly. The research findings hold implications for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in the field of sexual and reproductive health. It underscores the importance of addressing parental knowledge and attitudes to enhance the effectiveness of sex education programs. By understanding the specific concerns and misconceptions held by parents, tailored interventions can be developed to ensure that young people receive comprehensive, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive sex education .
