ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge and attitudes towards Breast cancer among female undergraduates of University of Benin. To achieve the purpose of the study, three (3) research questions were raised and important literature related to Breast cancer were clearly discussed.
The descriptive research design was used for this study and the population consisted of twenty one thousand eight hundred and eighty one (21881) female students across the sixteen (16) faculties of the University of Benin. A total of one hundred (100) female students were selected to represent the population of the study. The instrument used for data collection was a well-structured close-ended questionnaire with fifteen (15) items. The questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor and two other lecturers in the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education. The test retest reliability method was used to establish the reliability of the questionnaire. A total of one hundred (100) questionnaires were administered to the sample and data collected was analyzed using frequency count and percentage.
Based on the findings from the data collected and analyzed, it was therefore concluded that female undergraduates of the University of Benin have high knowledge and positive attitudes towards breast cancer, it was also further concluded that Female undergraduates of the University of Benin have high awareness of early detection methods of breast cancer such as self-examination. It was therefore recommended to enhance breast cancer education program, encourage regular Breast Cancer Screening, integrate Breast Cancer awareness into Curricula, leverage Peer Influence and social Media for Awareness.
