ABSTRACT
Modified clay minerals have an exceptional ability to remove different contaminants by improving the clay mineral adsorption properties that consequently increase more adsorption site and functional groups to adsorb different environmental pollutant. Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide was used to modify Bentonite clay to Organo-bentonite clay. The adsorption properties of Organo-bentonite clay was examined under various conditions using methyl orange solution as the adsorbate. The effect of various parameters such as contact time and pH were observed. The maximum adsorption of methyl orange was at 120 minutes with rapid adsorption occurring from 1 minute to 5 minutes. While the various pH shows that 45mg/l adsorbed more with high adsorption at the acidic medium than the basic medium, while the different concentration behaved the same at neutral pH. The adsorption study was best fit for Pseudosecond-order kinetic model giving correlation coefficient (R2=0.999). The qe experimental and calculated values for the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model were in good agreement as compared to that by Pseudo-first-order kinetic model.
