ABSTRACT

Uraria picta is a major constituent of several traditional medicines one of which is  the Indian Ayurvedic Dashmool formulation. It belongs to the family Fabaceae.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of  U. Picta  methanolic extract on the renal function of female albino Wistar rats using Urea and Creatinine as  markers.

The extract was administered orally at dose levels of 50mg/kg, 300mg/kg, 1000mg/kg and 2000mg/kg in correspondence with the rat groups. The activity of the extracts was assessed by comparing serum Urea and Creatinine levels in administered groups to a control group.

It was shown that U. Picta had no significant effect on the kidney when it comes to urea and creatinine clearance. This study therefore presents U. Picta as a safe pharmaceutical component with regards to renal function.
