ABSTRACT
Criminal justice in Nigeria is slow and the delay litigants encounter in the process often times get them discouraged from pursuing their case. Justice delayed is justice denied as delay in the trial of criminal cases can lead to instances where a suspect has been detained for years before being declared innocent. The delay in the administration of Criminal justice in Nigeria has been a violation of the citizen's right to fair hearing within a reasonable time.
This research work is aimed at achieving a criminal justice system that is efficient and effective and does not have the characteristic of delay which serves as a discouragement to the members of the society from allowing the due process of law in the attainment of justice. There are several approaches that can be employed to ensure for trials being done within a reasonable time. This research work points out the areas where the various organs of government can put in efforts to forward the cause of justice in Nigeria. It also points out the aspects where each organ of the Nigerian criminal justice system is lagging behind in their duty to ensure for an effective criminal justice system. This research work is doctrinal and had relied on journals, newspapers, textbooks, statutes and cases as sources of information.
This research work is done with the aim of contributing to the existing knowledge on this aspect of our legal system. Delay in the administration of criminal justice system in Nigeria is not a new phenomenon but it's impact are felt by citizens of Nigeria everyday with the issue not yet adequately addressed. This research work is aimed at enlightening everyone concerned by the criminal justice system of Nigeria on the roles they must play towards the attainment of an ideal criminal justice system.
