ABSTRACT
This study investigated the use of smartphones by journalists for newsgathering in Edo state. The study was anchored on the Technological Determinsm, Agenda-Setting and Diffusion of Innovations theories. The survey design was used with the aid of an 9- item questionnaire. Proportionate Stratified sampling technique was adopted in selecting the 393 participants for the study. The sample cut across eight (8) major media organizations. Simple percentage and frequency tables were used to analyze the data generated through the 4 point likert scale using mean scores. Finding shows that majority of the Journalists in Edo State make use of smartphones for newsgathering purposes such as capturing photos, communication with sources and colleagues. Also the study shows that despite the high level of the use of smartphones for newsgathering, journalists still contend with some issues such as bad network, high cost of smartphone prices, low storage capacity etc. The study concluded that the use of smartphones has brought about new and better ways in which newsgathering and dissemination can be done. This study recommended that journalists should be encouraged to improve upon their social media for better performance in their journalism practice and government should in turn, ensure that the unfavourable issue of bad network are curbed by launching more communication satellite into orbit.
