ABSTRACT

 The study focused on job retirement, and its effect on employee job performance using the university of Benin, Benin city as a case study. Specifically, the study sought to empirically investigate the attitude of employees towards job retirement, and to ascertain if employees in the university of Benin have existing plans for retirement; and as well to ascertain its impact on their job performance.

A survey research design was adopted and the population of the study were drawn from employees and staff of the university of Benin, ugbowo campus, Benin, Benin city, Edo state. A sample of 376 respondents was randomly selected from the population using the Taro yamen’s formular.. The study adopted the use of structured Questionnaire, tailored towards the objectives of the research, in obtaining data and responses from the respondents. A hundred copies of questionnaire was distributed to employees and staff of the selected institution, however, only 88 was retrieved. Research questions were raised and hypothesis generated to guide the conduct of the research; and the Data obtained from the respondents were retrieved and analyzed using Descriptive statistics, mean frequency, Linear Regression models, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Independent t-test through the Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

Findings obtained from the study amongst others indicates that, Employees have positive attitude towards job retirement, and their attitude and plans towards retirement significantly impacts on their job performance.

Based on the findings, the study recommends among other things that employees and organizations should create well-defined retirement plans that include financial, social, and personal goals as this would help boosten their morale towards greater work commitment, and in turn ensure organizational effectiveness and success.
