ABSTRACT

This study examines the job preferences and the phenomenon of "Japaism" among accounting graduates in Nigeria. "Japaism" is a colloquial term that refers to the trend of Nigerian graduates seeking employment opportunities abroad. This research aims to explore the factors influencing job choices among these graduates and to understand the motivations behind their desire to emigrate. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collects data through structured surveys and in-depth interviews with accounting graduates from several Nigerian universities. The analysis focuses on various job attributes that influence their preferences, such as salary expectations, job security, career advancement opportunities, work-life balance, and organizational culture. Additionally, the research investigates the extent and reasons for the increasing inclination towards emigration, including economic instability, limited local opportunities, and the perceived advantages of working abroad. Findings reveal that accounting graduates prioritize job security, competitive salaries, and professional growth when choosing careers. However, a significant proportion express a strong interest in seeking opportunities overseas, driven by factors such as better remuneration, superior career prospects, and enhanced quality of life in foreign countries. The study highlights the potential impact of this trend on Nigeria's talent retention and economic development. It concludes with recommendations for policy makers, educational institutions, and employers to address the underlying issues contributing to Japaism, emphasizing the need for strategies that enhance job satisfaction and career opportunities within Nigeria to mitigate the brain drain.
