ABSTRACT

This study investigated the ITV radio Healthy Living planning programme and the promotion of family planning among couples in Benin City. The research objectives were to find out the level of audience exposure to radio family planning programmes in Benin City, examine the effectiveness of family planning programmes in meeting the information needs of married couples in family planning, find out the attitude of Benin City residents towards family planning campaigns and examine the influence of the family planning campaigns on the residents of Benin City. The study adopted Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Agenda Setting Theoryand the study population comprised 1,496,000 residents of Benin City out of which 400 was selected as sample size. Descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. Data generated from the study were analysed using the Statistical Products and Service Solution (SPSS) version 21, while questionnaire was used as the research instruments for the study. Findings from the study showed that the extent of exposure to  ITV radio Healthy Living family programme among Benin City residents was high and that the effectiveness of ITV radio Healthy Living family planning programme in meeting the information needs of married couples in family planning was high, the attitude of Benin City residents towards family planning campaigns are positive and that ITV radio Healthy Living family planning programme influences married couples in Benin City to practice family planning. Based on the findings and observations from the field, it was recommended that efforts of the mainstream media, especially, radio, television, newspapers should be complemented by social media to engage in intensive and objective family planning programmes to be able to effectively and adequately cover educative the masses on the need for family planning in the right perspective for members of the society.
