ABSTRACT
This research focuses on the issues that arise in language use. Its main aims and objectives were to ascertain the loyalty strength of the indigenous Yoruba language as shown by native speakers of this language and as well identify their preference. The sample for the study consists of 100 respondents, males and females, from selected local government areas in Lagos State. These respondents are within the age bracket 15 – 50 and the instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. It was administered randomly to the informants used in this study. The data generated was analyzed using simple percentage according to Lehmann (1990) method of analysis. The result shows that the Yoruba language speakers are very loyal to the Yoruba language and prefer to use it in most life situations. Finally, the study suggests that the use of mother tongue/indigenous languages be encouraged to preserve languages from going into extinction.
