ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to isolate and characterize the methanol extract from Ficus sur leaves. The leaves were collected, dried, pulverized and extracted with methanol by maceration method. The solvent was removed using rotary evaporator. The crude extract was subjected to phytochemical screening while the isolated fraction was subjected to IR analysis for the determination of the functional group. The phytochemical constituents present includes Glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and alkaloids were present while tannins, eugenols and steroids were absent. Major component detected from the isolated methanol extract were phenols (peak 3300.50 and 1231.54), alkyl group (peak 1412.38), alkenes (peak 1980.24) and esters (peak 1296.33). The study indicated that the oil is rich with important constituents which are of physiological effect to human.
