ABSTRACT

The oral cavity is made up of the lips, gingivae, teeth, hard palate, cheek mucosa, mobile tongue and floor of the mouth. This study is aimed at isolating and showing the antibiotics susceptibility pattern of bacterial isolates from oral cavity of final year microbiology students of the University of Benin.

Swab Samples were collected from the oral cavity of fifty (50) final year Microbiology students of the University of Benin using sterile swab sticks. The swab sticks were then taken to the laboratory for microbiological analysis. Microbiological isolation was carried out using pour plate and streak plate methods of isolation. The isolated bacteria were identified using their cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics. The bacterial isolates were also screened for antibiotics sensitivity using disc diffusion method.

The result shows that bacterial counts for males ranged from 0.00±0.00 x 104cfu/ml to 26.00±0.02 x 104cfu/ml and 0.00±0.00 x 104cfu/ml to 74.00±0.04 x 104cfu/ml for females. The bacteria isolated from the oral cavity surfaces were Streptococcus sp., Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp and Staphylococcus aureus. The percentage occurrence of bacterial isolates from male and female oral cavity showed that E. coli has the highest percentage occurrence of 46.43% and 34.15% respectively. E. coli also had the highest total percentage occurrence with a percentage occurrence of 39.13% of the total swab samples. The antibiotics sensitivity test result shows that most of the bacterial isolates were sensitive to the antibiotics used. The result also showed that Gram +ve bacterial isolatesshowed resistance to ampiclox and zinnacef while Gram –ve bacterial isolates; Klebseilla sp and E. coli showed resistance to gentamycin. Proper hygiene which would include daily brushing of the mouth and regular visit to the dentist would aid in maintaining a healthy oral cavity.
