ABSTRACT
This paper is an appraisal of Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. This work also looks at how irony is employed to satirize the patriarchal society revealing the ideology behind the novel. However, this work also analyse the theme of betrayal specifically and how this manifest in different ways in the novel which is predominantly seen in polygamous homes, and also looks at the different literary devices employed by the writer in developing the story. This study adopts the qualitative method of research and employs the theory of ‘Realism’ to interpret the text appropriately, giving insight to the plot, the characters, actions and settings which helps to present the subject matter in the novel. Realistic criticism of the text helps the reader to relate in a realistic manner the happening in the novel which is also obtainable in most polygamous homes.
