INVITRO ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIDIARRHEA PROPERTIES OF POLYHERBAL FORMULATED TEA (Citrus limon, Curcuma longa, zingiber officinal, Allium sativum, and Moringa oleifera)

ABSTRACT

Human beings have depended on nature for their simple requirements, such as being the sources for medicines, shelters, food stuffs, fragrances, clothing, flavors, fertilizers, and means of transportation throughout the ages. The aim of this study is to determine the in vitro antioxidant and antidiarrhea properties of poly-herbal-formulated teas (Citrus limon, Curcuma longa, zingiber officinal, Allium sativum, and Moringa oleifera). In vitro antioxidant capability was examined using DPPH radical, superoxide radical activity, hydroxyl radical activity, and total antioxidant capacity techniques. Antidiarrhoea was evaluated using the castor oil-induced diarrhea and intestinal transit time model in mice. The findings show that the water-based extract of polyherbal tea can get rid of DPPH radicals, superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and all antioxidants. The tea's scavenging ability was comparable to that of ascorbic acid. The polyherbal-formulated tea (10 mg/kg) showed a significant reduction (p<0.05) in the weight of feces compared to the control. The tea has no effect on the onset time of diarrhea or the number of feces. Loperamide substantially extended the onset time of diarrhea and decreased the weight and number of stools compared to the control (p<0.05) in castor oil-induced diarrhea. In transit time, aqueous extract polyherbal formulated tea (5 and 10 mg/kg) has no influence on the distance traveled by charcoal or the percentage of charcoal travel compared to the control (p > 0.05). Loperamide at 5 mg/kg exhibits a statistical difference in distance traveled by charcoal and percentage of charcoal travel compared to control (p<0.05). The research showed that teas made from citrus limon, curcuma longa, ginger, allium sativum, and moringa oleifera have antioxidant properties but not properties that help with diarrhea or stomach movement
