ABSTRACT
The study investigated the problems and prospects of teaching English language in senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. To guide this study, five research questions were raised. Questionnaires were designed and used for data collection. The population of the study comprised of five thousand, four hundred and thirty nine (5,439) students in the twenty eight (28) senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample size of one hundred (100) students was drawn using the simple random sampling technique. The data retrieved from respondents were analyzed with the use of a computer software statistical tool (SPSS). Results after analysis were presented in tables using Percentages, Frequency and Mean. The study revealed that most teachers still teach English language using the traditional method only. There is still absence of instructional resources for English Language teaching in most schools amongst other findings. The study therefore recommended that schools and teachers should create new teaching methods or improve on existing teaching strategies, rather than rely solely on the use of textbooks. It was also recommended that standard instructional resources should be set up in senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
