INVESTIGATION ON THE DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING OF STOCKFISH (Gadus morhua) IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the distribution and marketing of stockfish (Gadus morhua) in Benin Metropolis.

Two hundred (200) questionnaires were distributed in four (4) Local Government Areas of selected markets, the Local Government area include; Egor, Ovia, Oredo and Ikpoba okha. Data for the study was obtained from both primary and secondary information sources. Personal interview was also conducted while secondary information was obtained from textbooks, journals, past projects, internet, conference papers and so on.

The age of stockfish distributors and marketers falls between 41-50 years, majority were married (89.8%) with secondary school leaving certificate and primary school certificate (76.2% and 17.7%) respectively. It further showed that many of the distributors and marketers (40.5%) had been in the business for 6-10 years (41.3%), majority of the marketers and distributors sold all types of stockfish parts, (53.6%). Majority of these marketers use sac bags in packaging and as storage of stockfish which is usually distributed by means of public transport. While (55.2%) of the respondents stated that the weight of stockfish determines the sale’s price, others sell stockfish using basket (26.2%). Majority of stockfish (74.6%) distributors and marketers asserted that the major problem faced during transportation, distribution and marketing of stockfish is that is expensive because of huge transportation costs and intermediary retailers involved in the chain of stockfish distribution and marketing.

This study revealed the existence of a thriving profitable business in distribution and marketing of  stockfish in the study area.
