ABSTRACT

The problem of ground settlement in the Ogurobo Street residential quarter of the Ekosodin community in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria is a multi-faceted issue that poses significant challenges to the safety, well-being, and socio-economic conditions of all its residents, both students and non-students. The aim of this study is to investigate the ground settlement in the residential quarter of No 34. Ogurobo Street in Ekosodin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Reconnaissance survey was carried out to determine the extent and causes of the ground settlement in the study area. The geotechnical properties of the soil, which include moisture contest, specific gravity, sieve analysis, atterberg test, compaction test, triaxial and consolidation test were all carried out in accordance with ASTM (American Society For Testing And Material) The geotechnical properties of the study area showed that the moisture content ranged from (17 to 23%), the specific gravity ranged from ( 2.29 - 2.55) which is below 2.65 as standard specific gravity, the sieve analysis shows that the sand ranged from (37.48-49.1%) the clay and the silt ranged from (50.9-62.52%), with liquid limit (LL) of ranged (33.71-44.72%), plastic limit (PL) of ranged (11.24-20.9%), plasticity index of ranged (17.86-23.92), the compaction test showed that the max. dry density ranged from (1.74 – 2.48%), opt. moisture content from rangd (10.6 – 16.4%), the triaxial test shows that the cohension ranged from (2.74 - 3.43), frictional angle (18 - 240 ), ultimate bearimg capacity (159.48 – 286.74), safe bearing capacity (93.22 – 157.91), and the consolidation test conducted showed that the compression index ranged from (0.22 to 0.24), Soil in this category is identified for expansion, high compressibility, poor drainage and compaction characteristics, consequently making it an unstable foundation material, recommendations from this area are, thorough subsoil investigation for foundation stability should be carried out before construction process, proper drainage system should be provided
