ABSTRACT

In Edo State, gully erosion is swiftly evolving into a formidable menace, negatively influencing land use and leading to the depletion of essential resources such as raw materials, vegetation, and crops. The study was carried out to investigate the geotechnical properties of Iguosa gully erosion site with a view to proffer lasting solutions to the environmental menace. Sample was collected using the calibrated hand auger at six point and at a depth of 1m and 2m respectively, the samples were then put in a closed container to prevent it from losing moisture and then transported to the university of Benin Civil Engineering laboratory to determine the index properties of the soil (such as; natural moisture content, specific gravity, sieve analysis and consistency limit) and the strength properties of the soil, such as the cohesion, angle of internal friction, maximum dry density and optimum moisture content. These tests were carried out using standard procedures as recommended by BS 1377:PART 1-4 and AASTHO classification. The specific gravity of the soil ranged from 2.41 to 2.66. The percent passing sieve number 0.075mm ranges from 1.23% to 49.56% while the liquid ranges from 17.64% to30.98% and plasticity index ranges from 14.35% to 17.87%. The strength determined by the cohesion and the angle frictional values which ranges from 6.8% to 19.8% and 1.43g/cm3 to 1.76g/cm3 respectively. The values obtained from the investigation revealed that the soil is silty and has low resistance to environmental factors. These the results also show that the soil is prone to erosion hence there is the need to embark on remedial measure to forestall slope failure.
