ABSTRACT

Aluminium casts are very good materials that are used in various engineering Designs. One of the major causes of imperfections that limit the accuracy of casting thereby causing various defects is poor moisture content in the greensand. This study is centered on investigating the effect of moisture content of green sand on aluminium casting

The equipment used were those in the Foundry Workshop of the University of Benin, Edo-Nigeria. Sand samples were collected and varying percentages of water was introduced to four different samples which was used in producing the greensand mould. Aluminium castings were obtained from the different moulds. Tensile and Compression tests were carried out on the aluminum casting using the Avery Dennison Universal Testing Machine. The result obtained were analyzed and compared to that of literature

From the results obtained in this study and the analysis of the results, the casting with 6% moisture content had the highest tensile and compressive strength of 87866.791 KN/m2 and 115000N/m2 respectively, while the casting with 9% moisture content has the lowest tensile and compressive strength of 32328.348 KN/m2 and 70000 N/m2 respectively.
