ABSTRACT
With the increase of reactive power IX2 loss in distribution lines, it has led to high level of low voltage profile in distribution power networks and has called for a lot of concerns. Therefore, it became necessary to model the Ugbowo distribution substation network with capacitors to ascertain the level of effects it will have on the system. Hence, this project seeks to investigate the effects of capacitor banks on the Ugbowo distribution substation feeders. To achieve this, a model of the Ugbowo distribution network was made using NEPLAN software. When the network was modelled without capacitors and power flow analysis by Newton Raphson method was carried out using NEPLAN, the result showed that seven (7) buses violated the expected voltage limits due to excessive reactive power losses. However, when the system was modelled with capacitors, the results showed that the voltage profile of these buses that violated the voltage limits were greatly improved as well as other buses, and thus the reactive power losses were reduced. Therefore, the distribution unit is in urgent need of voltage profile improvement techniques to ameliorate the current situation of voltage violations and poor power quality in the network. Capacitor bank placement is a recommended approach to achieving this
