ABSTRACT

The study examined teacher’s perception on the challenges of teaching Practical Biology in Senior Secondary School in Egor LGA. Through this investigation the challenges the Teacher face in teaching practical Biology causes setback in achieving the set objectives of teaching practical Biology, therefore great importance should be attended to experimental work for effective teaching to occur. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a survey design sampling technique in order to achieve the purpose of the study. The sample for the consisted of 28 Biology Teachers as respondents randomly selected from 14 senior secondary schools which were stratified into two as 13 state and 1 federal public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Data was collected with the aid of questionnaire. The validity of the instrument were ascertained through face validity and using exert judgment. Data collected were analyzed using mean value. Based on the finding of the study, it was ascertained that the condition of laboratories in senior secondary school in Egor LGA includes that the laboratory does not have enough tables and chairs for students to sit during practicals, laboratory is small to contain large number of students, laboratory is old and dilapidated due to neglect, laboratory do not have necessary apparatus used in carrying out Biology practical, most apparati in the laboratory are in poor working condition and inadequate time for Biology practical lessons whereas a lot of time are spent on teaching the theory parts, these possess a big challenge in teaching practical biology finally, to curb these challenges, parents should provide their children with necessary requirements needed to carry out practical work, Government should provide schools with laboratory having necessary working apparatus and organize seminar and workshops to enlighten teachers.
