The purpose of this study was to investigate the recent trends of cultism among students in tertiary institutions using University of Benin as a case study. The method used in the collection of data was a structured close-ended questionnaire. A questionnaire schedule was constructed and distributed to two hundred (200) respondents in some Faculties in the University of Benin, Benin City. The data collected were analyzed and the results were displayed on tables. Findings from the study revealed that broken homes can lead to cultism. It was also revealed in the study that harsh economic situation in the country can encourage cultism in tertiary institutions. Also, it was found that cultism can result in the destruction of lives and properties of students in their multitude if not controlled. Furthermore, findings from the study revealed that the effect of cultism could result to arrest, detention and imprisonment of those involved in it. Based on these findings, recommendations were made on the following area: parents should monitor their children both in and outside the school and counsel them regularly. Also, it was recommended that students should be properly guided by counsellors in the schools’ guidance and counselling center. It is believed that if these are followed, it will go a long way to assist students and promote their learning.
