INVESTIGATION INTO SCHOOL PLANT PLANNING AND STUDENTS'ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was designed to investigate into school plant planning and students’ academic performance in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. Does Classroom as an aspect of school plant planning influence students' academic performance? Does Laboratory as an aspect of school plant planning influence students' academic performance? Does Library as an aspect of school plant planning influence students' academic performance? Does Playground as an aspect of school plant planning influence students' academic performance? Does furniture as an aspect of school plant planning influence students' academic performance? The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprised all the seventeen public junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State, current principals were used as respondents . The population of the study was two thousand three hundred and twenty two junior secondary school students in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. A sample size of six public junior secondary schools were randomly selected from the population. Forty Students were selected as respondents from the six public junior secondary schools using simple random sampling technique. Checklist was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collated were analyzed using Frequency count and simple percentage. The findings from the study revealed that classroom has substantial relationship with students’ academic performance and adequate classroom planning is an inevitable requirement for conducive learning environment which enhances students’ academic performance in secondary schools. It was seen that Library has significant relationship with performances of students and it is also the hub of academic learning which when inadequately planned has a tool on students academic performance. It was further revealed that playground has a significant relationship with students' academic performance and that playground as school plant provides a base for students' extracurricular activities which enhances students cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain of learning and by extension enhances students ‘academic performance. The recommendation includes; Nongovernmental organization (NGOs) should not relent in assisting Government in making provisions for school plants, Nigeria Government should endeavor to provide adequate funds for provision and maintenance of school plants.
