ABSTRACT

This study investigates the competencies of Quantity Surveyors (QS) acting as project managers in Edo State construction firms. The research examines the roles of QS in project management consultancy and factors influencing their competency levels. Drawing from established literature, the study fills a gap by focusing on QS competencies specifically in project management. Through a structured methodology, including data gathering and statistical analysis, the research assesses QS competency levels and proposes strategies for enhancement. The findings contribute to informing clients about QS effectiveness in project management, guiding QS seeking to offer project management services, and serving as a reference for future academic and professional inquiries. Data from 35 respondents comprising QS, architects, engineers, and builders were analyzed to understand their backgrounds, roles in project management consultancy, factors affecting their competency, and strategies to enhance it. Findings reveal a generally positive perception of QS ability to fulfill project management roles, with emphasis on procurement, risk, and variation management. Factors like experience, familiarity with industry standards, and problem-solving abilities significantly influence QS competency. The study underscores the importance of continuous training, integration of competency frameworks into education, mentor-ship programs, technology adoption, and policy support in enhancing QS competency in project management, thereby contributing to improved project outcomes in the construction industry.
