ABSTRACT

The role  of history education in promoting cultural awareness among secondary school students in Ndokwa west local government area. In order to attain the objectives of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. This study utilized a descriptive survey research design to thoroughly examine the target group. The population of the study consisted of two thousand seven hundred and sixty (2760) SSII students and Two Hundred and Seventy Six (276) Teachers from the 23 public secondary schools in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State (Delta State Ministry of Education, 2023).

The study sample of 338 students and 161 Teachers was selected from a total of Twenty Three (23) public Secondary schools located in Ndokwa west Local Government Area. The study employed the Simple random sampling technique to choose 338 students and 161 Teachers. The Raosoft Online Sample Size Calculator was utilized to enhance precision and minimize the possibility of mistakes in determining the necessary sample size for the study. The research instrument was a questionnaire designed by the researcher. It was divided into four sections: section A-D. Section A contained five questions on Current Design of the History Curriculum in Ndokwa West Secondary Schools for Cultural Awareness Promotion, Section B contained five questions on Perceptions of Secondary School History Teachers in Ndokwa West Regarding Their Role in Cultural Awareness Promotion, Section C contained five questions on Challenges Facing Effective Promotion of Cultural Awareness Through History Education in Ndokwa West Secondary Schools and Section D is the students questionnaire  containing ten questions on Perception of Secondary School Students in Ndokwa West on Cultural Awareness Promotion Through History Education. The response obtained from the respondent was to help to validate the research questions.

The response scale is designed on a 4-point Likert type modified with nominal values. It ranged from Strongly Agree (SA) = 4 pts, Agree (A) = 3 pts, Disagree (D) = 2 pts and Strongly Disagree (SD) = 1 pt, open ended questions were also asked in the demographic section (part A) of the questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. In order to determine the reliability of the instrument, the questionnaire will be administered to 20 respondents who were not part of the study and retrieved, and the data collected from the respondents will be subjected to Cronbach Alpha statistics and a reliability coefficient will be obtained. Data was collected using a questionnaire. In administering the questionnaire, the face-to-face method was adopted to minimize the chances of errors in the process of responding to it. Data was analyzed item by item mean and standard deviation (SD).
