ABSTRACT

Ficus exasparata also known as sand paper leaf is commonly used in traditional folk medicine for the treatment of multiple types of diseases. This study investigated the effect of Ficus exasperata on 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) induced colon cancer and other related liver and kidney damages. 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) is a carcinogen effective for the induction of tumors of the colon and the rectum in rats by systemic subcutaneous injections. Sixty-four (64) rats with weight 90-160g divided into 8 groups (labeled groups 1-8) of 8 rats each were used in this study for the duration of 11weeks. While Group 1 acted as a control, Group 2 was administered the plant extract only, Group 3 were given DMH (30mg/kg) only, Group 4 and 5 received DMH + extract simultaneously with (500mg and 750mg respectively), Groups 6 received pre-treatment, Groups 7 received post-treatment and Group 8 received standard drug + DMH. At the end of the experiment, the result showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the glutathione peroxidase level for all groups. But the levels of reduced glutathione showed significant difference (p < 0.05). At the end of the study Ficus exasperata will be proven to have anti-carcinogenic effect on DMH induced wistar rats.
