ABSTRACT
This study investigates the waste management problems at the Akanu Ibiam hostel, University of Benin. This was with a view to ascertaining the extent to which funds affect the efficiency of the waste management team in the University of Benin and to find out the professional training status of the staff involved. This study was also aimed at verifying the impact of people’s attitude towards University of Benin waste management team’s mandate of maintaining a clean environment and to find out the impact of monitoring and control on the management of waste in Akanu Ibiam hostel.
Based on the nature of the research questions, primary data was employed to capture the opinion of sampled respondents. A properly structured questionnaire was administered to 200 sampled respondents. The data collected from the survey was presented in charts and analyzed descriptively.
The result show that funds affect the efficiency of the University’s waste management team. It also shows that not all staff of the University’s waste management team are fully trained and that monitoring and control has no effect on the University’s waste management team. It was then concluded out that lack of personal hygiene was one of the major causes for the indiscriminate dumping of refuse. It was also concluded that insufficient funding of the waste management team were the major reasons for the poor waste management in the Akanu Ibiam Hostel. It was then recommended that an increase in the allocation of funds to the waste management team be made, trainings should be carried out for the team members and staff, public sensitization programs should also be carried out to enlighten and re-orient students on their attitude to one another and to members of the staff/team of the waste management board.
