ABSTRACT

In lecture theatres, several variables can affect students' performances - thermal comfort health and well-being. The type of activity one does may affect the thermal comfort of one more, for example, one running tends to have a higher temperature than one seated. Most researchers have focused on determining the thermal comforts of lecture theatres rather than special ones like architectural design studios with high metabolic rate activities. For this study, data is collected from the building and students. The building plan and a few information are obtained with BIM software - Autodesk Revit and LEED thermal comfort questionnaires were adapted and distributed to students to determine the impact of orientation and form of buildings on thermal comfort and energy use of the users of the studios in the faculty of environmental sciences, the University of Benin. The study takes the design of the faculty focusing on the studio spaces, analysing the current orientation and form and the thermal comfort and energy use in the building during hot seasons. The research highlights the importance of form and orientation on energy use (society) and students' well-being and health. Keywords: thermal comfort, form of a building, orientation of a building, ventilation, tropical climate, humid climate, architectural studio, energy use.
