ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as a correlates of job commitment among sports councils’ coaches in Edo State. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship existing between intrinsic motivation and job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State, to investigate the influence of extrinsic motivation on job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State, to discover the effectiveness of intrinsic, extrinsic on job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State, to examine the intrinsic motivation, job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State based on gender and finally, to investigate the impact of extrinsic motivation job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State based on age. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, five research questions and hypotheses were raised and formulated respectively and answered.

            The study adopted explanatory (causal) and inferential research design will be used. The population of this study will be made up of coaches in the sport council in Edo State which is 115. The sample size of this study is 100 respondents drawn from all staff cadre of the council. The instrument used for the collection of data was the questionnaire which was administered to a total number of 105 respondents and 100 was retrieved. Data will be analyze using Pearson Product Correlation Coefficient and regression analysis.

The study establishes that there is a very strong relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on job commitment of coaches of sport council in Edo State. The study recommends that the management of the sport council in Edo State should invest on the conditions of service to improve job commitment among coaches and upgrade sporting facilities in the state to ignite the passion of coaches towards job commitment.
