Abstract
Code switching involves the switching of one language to another in an utterance or a sentence. The focus of this research work is to identify Intra sentential and Inter sentential code switching in some selected Nigerian hip hop songs. This research work comprises of English, NPE and Yoruba .The Nigerian Pidgin is the most widely spoken in Nigeria where most of its population speak it as the first language. Pidgin is seen as a local language in Nigeria it cuts across tribe ,background and culture making it easy for all Nigerians to communicate. The aim of this work is to identify the effects of code switching in Nigerian hip hop songs. In gathering the data of this work some randomly selected popular artistes were selected. The information of the selected artistes are gathered from (Wikipedia) and anyone with an internet connection can access it. The methods of data analysis of this work is selecting of samples and transcriptions. Major findings shows how various artistes use their indigenous languages in the composition if their song lyrics and the message they intend to convey to the listeners.
