ABSTRACT

This comprehensive study delves into the complex dimensions of money politics and vote buying, focusing on the 2020 Governorship Election in Edo State, Nigeria. Concentrating on the metropolitan areas of Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, and Oredo, the research employs a chronological assessment of electoral conduct from the colonial to the post-colonial era. Utilizing primary sources, qualitative data is generated and analyzed to reveal that the 2020 Edo state governorship election was marred by financial inducements, stemming from factors such as poverty and ignorance .In addition to shedding light on the electoral landscape's historical context, this research critically assesses the pervasive phenomenon of money politics, exploring the intricate relationships between financial influences, political actors, and the electoral process. The study uncovers the consequences of a flawed and questionable electoral process in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgent need to address issues like poverty. Drawing from these findings, the study recommends a serious tackling of poverty as a fundamental step toward mitigating financial inducements in elections. Furthermore, it advocates for collaboration between anti-corruption agencies and financial institutions to monitor cash movements during elections, contributing valuable insights to inform future electoral reforms and enhance the overall integrity of the democratic process in the Nigerian context.
