ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to examine the Interplay between religion and ethics .The objectives of the study were to bring both the etymological and the general usages of the terms religion and ethics, outline their areas of convergence and divergence as independent discipline, as well as their relevance to each other in promoting a better society. Evaluate how both principles (religion and ethics) are expressed among individuals, political system as well as the society.

The study relied on both oral and textual data. The oral data were gathered from unstructured interviews from different religious leaders (i.e, pastors, imam, practitioners of indigenous African Religion such as Native doctor, sorcerer, diviners, e t c. For the textual data, the study relied on Sacred texts such as Bible, and Quran on which exegetical analysis was carried out.

According to the study's conclusions, religion consists of ideas, attitudes, and behaviours that connect people to sacred worlds and supernatural forces, whereas ethics is more commonly associated with rules governing social behaviour. Religion and ethics are both from different sources but they work hand in hand in shaping and moulding man for a better society. The findings of the research are also predicated on the idea that religion and ethics are intertwined to the point where they support one another and have similar objectives, which is to help each person become a good person in order to create and grow a just and peaceful community.
