INTERLINGUAL AND INTRALUNGUAL ERRORS: A CASE STUDY OF WAZOBIA TELEVISION STATION

ABSTRACT

This study examines speech production errors produced by speakers form Wazobia television station. It focuses on a speaker named Clement Oladipupo, his speech errors. It examines what causes this errors in his speech production.

The data utilised in this research was sourced from a video gotten from YouTube which was published in 2024 by the television station. The video is titled, Navigating homelessness and affordable housing in Nigeria.

The study discovered that there are two types of error prevalent in his speech error which are interlingual error which occur due to mother tongue interference and the second is intralingual error which is as a result of overgeneralization based on partial exposure of the target language. Intralingual error is manifested through the substitution of the schwa sound with a sound from the speaker mother tongue, the same aslo happen with diphthongs and long vowels. Intralingual error occurs due to English Orthography, in English language, the spelling is not related to pronunciation , so pronunciation is not predictable.
