ABSTRACT

Ficus exasperata (sandpaper leaf) is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of several pathological disorders including inflammatory disorders. This study was carried out to evaluate the therapeutic activity of Ficus exasperata on 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine (DMH) induced colon cancer. 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine (DMH) is an effective carcinogen for the induction of both colon and rectum tumors in rats by systemic subcutaneous mode of injections. This study shows the effects of oral administration of different doses (500mg/kg and 750mg/kg) of methanol extract of ficus exasperata on colon cancer-male wistar albino rats induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). The following parameters were experimented: Malondialdehyde test, Interleukin-6 and colon histology. Sixty four (64) albino rats were distributed into eight (8) groups. Group 1 (control group) was not subjected to colorectal damage, but only received normal feed and water. Group 2 received 500mg/kg of extract but was not given DMH. Group 3 were given 30mg/kg DMH (negative control). Group 4 and 5 received 30mg/kg of DMH and was treated with 500mg/kg and 750mg/kg of methanol extract of ficus exasperata respectively. Group 6 and 7 which were the pre-treatment and posttreatment group respectively of which group 6 received 500mg/kg of extract before the administration of 30mg/kg DMH and group 7 received 30mg/kg DMH before administration of 500mg/kg of the extract. Group 8 received DMH and Standard drug (flourouracil) only. The results indicate that the pre-treatment and post-treatment group with 500mg/kg of extract caused non-significant elevation (p>0.05) in Malondialdehyde when compared with the DMH + Standard drug group. The negative control group caused a significant elevation (p<0.05) in interleukin-6 when compared with the other groups.
