The relationship between Benin kingdom and Urhobo people was highly influenced by their geography, it shaped their behavior, way of life and economy.it is also evident that the culture of both ethnic groups were inter related as this could be seen in their way of worship of god’s, food and mode of dressing. The Benin kingdom also referred to as the Edo kingdom, is one of the oldest and most powerful state in west Africa.it was founded in the 11th century by the Edo people who are believed to have migrated from Egypt, settled in Ile -Ife before finally arriving at their present location .the kingdom reached it's height of power and influence in the 15th and 16th centuries when it controlled a vast empire that spanned most of present day southern Nigeria

The origin of Benin kingdom are shrouded in myths, but it is believed that the first Oba(king)was Eweka I , according to tradition, Eweka I was the son of a Benin prince and princess from the neighbouring kingdom of Ile -Ife .he is said to have founded the kingdom along 1180AD and founded the capital at the city of Benin which is now known as Benin city. However, the empire experienced decline in the late 18th century when the British invaded and looted the palace taking away it's work of art and cultural artifacts. Although, this event marks the end of the kingdom's inter-dependence and its incorporation into the British empire. Today, Benin kingdom is a significant part of modern-day Nigeria and it traditional rulers, Oba continued to play an essential role in the political and cultural life of this region.
