SUMMARY

This study examined intelligence and crime policing in Nigeria, and focused on the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force in Edo State. Its major objective was to examine the place of intelligence in effective policing in Nigeria. In order to achieve this objective, the study formulated and answered the following research questions:

 The study reviewed related literature on the concepts of intelligence, crime policing, and insecurity. It took an overview of the various security challenges in Nigeria as well as the Nigeria’s intelligence agencies. Particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services. The study also took a review of the numerous challenges of policing and the impact of intelligence-led policing on Nigeria’s internal security. It further reviewed works on the challenges of intelligence-led policing in Nigeria, the study applied the System and Elite Theories for its theoretical analysis. It applied both the primary and secondary methods of data collection and the main primary data collection instrument was the questionnaire. The research variables were analyzed with frequency analysis of respondents’ opinions and findings were discussed with relevant literature.
