ABSTRACT

The study investigated the integration of Multimodal literacy strategies in the teaching of English language in  secondary classrooms. The design adopted for this study was the survey method. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide this study: What are the available multimodal /technology gadgets in secondary schools?

What is the level of utilization of technology gadgets for teaching English Language in Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State?

Relationship between utilization of multimodal literacy strategies and students’ academic performance?

Relationship between language laboratory utilization and students’ academic performance?

The population of the study consisted of 102 teachers from the thirteen (13) public secondary schools in Ovia North East local government area. The sample size for this study was a total number of twenty-six (26) English language teachers. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from respondents. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed and analyzed using mean and standard deviation.

From findings of the study, it was revealed that there is basic technology available for the teaching and learning of English language in Secondary schools in Ovia North-East but however, there is little or no utilisation of these technologies due to lack of applicable knowledge. The study recommended that relevant authorities should provide adequate technological infrastructures and the required training for teachers in order to aid the teaching and learning of English language using the appropriate technologies.
