ABSTRACT
This work argues in defense of democracy being a good system of government, in that if well practiced, can lead to alleviating the suffering of the people. It critically examines the tenets of democracy and compares it with what is being practiced as democracy in Nigeria. The 'Nigerian styled democracy' is inadequate for development in Nigeria and as such not led to the reduction of the various ills or evils lurking within it's borders of which Insurgency is one. The lives and properties of the people in Nigeria are in danger because of the insecurity of life and properties due to the failure of those in authority who are supposed to give democratic dividends to the people. The rise in Insurgency is as a result of unethical practice of the leadership. This work argues that the adoption of a democratic model which disempowers the masses and exposes them to life threatening situations must give way to an ideal democratic practice for the transformation of the living conditions of the masses and the development of the people.
