Abstract
The study was designed to investigate influence of vocational education programmes on the socio economics empowerments of youth in Ovia East Edo State. To achieve the purpose intended for the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study
The discriptive survey research was used for this study.
The population of the study considering of ninety-five thousand, eight hundred and twenty-eight youths (95,828) in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study consists of two hundred (200) youth respondents in Ovia North East local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for this study was selected using the simple random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, simple percentage and mean score analysis.
Findings of this study revealed that lack of funds, lack of amenities, inadequate facilities and equipment for teaching, disabilities of some youths and choice of location are the problems confronting the youths in accessing vocational educational programmes Ovia North East Local Government Area. It was further revealed leather, textile and weaving making, hairdressing, tailoring and catering are the types of vocational educational programmes available to youths in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was recommended that vocational education programmes should be allocated with adequate funds and resources. Most of the problems encountered by non-formal education in Nigeria are as a result of poor funding of the programme. Also, Government should endeavour to partner with NGOs and private firms to adequately fund Technical and Vocational Education in order to achieve the desired goals of this programme.
