ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of vocational education on the empowerment of graduates in Edo State. To guide the study, four research questions were formulated. The research design chosen for this study was descriptive survey research, and a proportionate sampling technique was employed to select a sample of 67 post-graduate students from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education within the Faculty of Education at the University of Benin. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions derived from the research questions. The questionnaire was validated by two experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, as well as the supervisor. In order to assess its reliability, the questionnaire was administered to ten post-graduate students who were not a part of the sample study. The Cronbach Alpha reliability statistic yielded a coefficient value of 0.73, indicating acceptable reliability. Data analysis involved using the mean and standard deviation to analyze the collected data. The findings of the study revealed that vocational education has a significant influence on the selfemployment of graduates in Edo State and also helps reduce unemployment. Based on these results, it can be concluded that vocational education plays a crucial role in empowering graduates by enabling them to become self-employed, acquire valuable skills, alleviate poverty, and address the issue of unemployment among graduates. In light of these conclusions, it is recommended that the government reviews its national educational policy to make vocational education more appealing to the large population of young individuals. Additionally, it is crucial for vocational and technical institutions across Nigeria to procure modern technologies, equipment, and teaching aids. Furthermore, mission organizations and private entities should focus on and invest in the vocational and technical development of young individuals to help combat the ongoing challenges of unemployment and poverty.
