ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of urban-rural migration on the socio-economic development of communities in Oredo local government area of Edo State.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consists of individuals who are residing in the newly developed property in all the rural sub-urban or rural communities in Oredo local government area of Edo State for a period of five (5) years and above. The personnel that was of interest in the study include: urban-rural migrants, local government, the community members and future researchers. A total number of 380. A simple random sampling technique was adopted in the study whereby 20% was used to randomly select the sample.
The study adopted the questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated using experts’ judgement approach and was tested for reliability through the Cronbach’s alpha procedure. After analysis, the study revealed that Urban-rural migration has influenced the socio-economic development of communities in Oredolocal government area; That there are a lot of economic benefits of urban-rural migration,; There are number of social benefits of urban-rural migration to communities in Oredo local government of Edo State;the major challenges of urban-rural migration to the communities in Oredo local government of Edo State are deforestation, land degradation, pollution, including depletion of natural resources; loss of agricultural lands among others.Based on the findings of the study, urban-rural migration has influenced the socio-economic development of communities in Oredo local government area of Edo State. The study further recommended that Government should focus on the factors causing urban-rural migration in Oredo communities of Edo state.; There should be an increased access to education so that both migrants and indigents can understand the influence of migration; There should be an Improvement in economic conditions so that the migrants have better opportunities in the city and this could also help in promoting agriculture and other rural industries, providing access to education and healthcare, or investing in rural infrastructure.
