ABSTRACT
This study aimed to determine the influence of unstable intimate relationship on the mental health and academic performance among undergraduates of the University of Benin, Benin City. The study examined the prevalence, factors as well as the extent to which the effects such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem affect the mental health and lead to low academic performance of undergraduates.
There were various variables that were employed to fit into the sample size and with the help of a researcher made questionnaire. The Taro Yamani formula was adopted to get the sample size and thorough analysis was carried out with the data obtained from respondents.
It was revealed that undergraduates in their first year were mostly involved in an unstable relationship and they consumed their time more with their partners by skipping classes. Anxiety and depressions are effects that most of the undergraduates suffer as they were mostly worried that their unstable relationship. This has negatively impacted in their academics as they do nit concentrate in classes thus leading to low academic performance. The researcher concluded that as a result of the effects of unstable relationship amongst undergraduates on their mental health, it has resulted to low academic performance. However, the researcher also detailed some recommendations and ways by which undergraduates could get out from such relationship. One of the best recommendation is to cut of contact with partner as responded by respondents.
