INFLUENCE OF TRAINING PROGRAMMES ON THE JOB PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

The study adopted a descriptive survey. The population of the study comprises of the 53 English Language teachers in the fourteen (14) public secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo state. A total number of twenty-two (22) teachers were drawn from the population of the study using the simple random sampling technique were used as the respondents for this study. The research instrument for the study was a Questionnaire titled: Influence of Training Programmes on the Job Performance of Secondary School Teachers” (ITPJPSST),which was distributed to the respondents and collected immediately after completion from respondents. The simple percentage and mean score was used in computing the responses of the questionnaire items. To account for the reliability of the study, the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used which gave a value of 0.51

At the end of the study, the researcher found that through workshops, seminars, conference teachers can organize their plan lesson, master their subjects, control their classes, present lesson and evaluate lessons in order to improve their performances. The researcher recommended among others that both the new and old teachers should be allowed to participate in in-service programmes so as to keep them abreast of current trends in educational practices and symposiums should be organized regularly for teachers if possible in other to exchange ideas on areas that required immediate attention in the day to day practice of teaching.
