ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of the use of appropriate Instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of History Education in Oredo Local Government Area. Five research questions were raised to guide the study.

The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was a total number of all students in the fourteen (14) secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City. The sample size for this study is a total number of one hundred (100) students adopting the simple random sampling method. The data retrieved from respondents were critically examined and checked for completeness and accuracy. Data was analyzed by the use of percentages and frequency tables.

From the findings of the study, it was discovered that government focus more on the provision of infrastructural materials in schools, like buildings, chairs, tables. It was also found that teachers’ motivation for teaching was adversely affected due to the unavailability or sparseness of resources for teaching. Also, it was realized from the finding of this research study that schools hardly improvise materials for teaching and learning, talk more of teachers improvising them. Therefore, as a result of these identified problems, it was recommended that the government should be more responsive in the equal distribution of teaching and learning resources, especially to rural education centres. Also, it was recommended from the findings that schools should ensure teachers are supplied with adequate and relevant instructional materials Instructional for effective learning and also try as much as possible to improvise them when insufficient or unavailable.
